Barcelona v Arsenal Preview

7th March 2011 by andym

Barcelona will be looking to avenge their 2-1 defeat at the Emirates a fortnight ago as they host Arsenal in the second leg of this all-important last 16 Champions League clash Tuesday evening. Arsenal triumphed in the first leg of this tie just two weeks ago thanks to goals from Robin van Persie and Andrey Arshavin. Barcelona originally took the lead early through a David Villa strike but Arsene Wenger's men battled back valiantly to claim a 2-1 victory. With injury worries, League Cup heartache and an unconvincing performance against Sunderland last weekend Arsenal will certainly have … [Read more...]

Manchester City 3-0 Aris Salonika

24th February 2011 by andym

Manchester City cruised to the last 16 of the Europa League thanks to goals from Edin Dzeko and Yaya Toure in their 3-0 win over Aris Salonika this evening. Man City were held to a goal-less draw in the previous leg but it was the £27m January signing Edin Dzeko who got on the scoresheet twice early-on after providing two calm finishes. Roberto Mancini's men continued to have the lion's share of possession throughout and Yaya Toure rounded off the victory late on after firing home from a Mario Balotelli rebound off the post. City are due to play Dynamo Kiev in the next round after they … [Read more...]

Liverpool 1-0 Sparta Prague

24th February 2011 by andym

Liverpool booked their place in the Europa League last 16 thanks to a late strike from forward Dirk Kuyt at Anfield this evening. Kuyt headed home in the 86th minute from a Raul Meireles corner to secure a dramatic 1-0 victory over Sparta Prague. Liverpool looked destined to take the tie into extra-time after failing to convert one of the many chances they had during the match but it was the Dutchman Dirk Kuyt who put the game to bed with his late goal for the Reds. Midfielder Sotirios Kyrgiakos had earlier been denied for Liverpool when Sparta Prague keeper Jaromir Blazek made an … [Read more...]

FC Copenhagen 0-2 Chelsea

22nd February 2011 by andym

Chelsea gave their Champions League hopes a massive boost this evening as they ran out 2-0 winners over FC Copenhagen thanks to two goals from Nicholas Anelka. The Blues started brightly and it didn't take long for the away side to open the scoring after a misplaced pass from ex-Chelsea midfielder Jesper Gronkjaer fell straight to Anelka's feet and he provided a cool finish past the Copenhagen keeper Johan Wiland just inside twenty minutes. As the second peiord began things worsened for the hosts and again it didn't take long for Chelsea to take the initiative and add a second goal … [Read more...]

Sparta Prague 0-0 Liverpool Highlights

17th February 2011 by andym

Liverpool's Kenny Dalglish had to settle for a draw in his first European match in charge this evening but his side still remain well placed to progress to the Europa League last 16. The visitors Liverpool looked strong from the outset but were unable to capitalise on a myriad of possession as it was Sparta's Manuel Pamic who went closest in the first period. Glen Johnson had the best chance for Liverpool after poking a shot just wide early into the second half but Dalglish's men, without injured captain Steven Gerrard, never looked like scoring in this forgettable bore-draw tonight. They … [Read more...]

Chelsea's dreadful run continues as they suffered yet another poor result in their final Group F tie with Marseille in the Champions League. Despite already guaranteeing themselves top spot of the group, it will still be a disappointing result and performance all round for Carlo Ancelotti's men as a late strike from Brandao was the difference here at the Stade Velodrome this evening. … [Read more...]

Arsenal ensured qualification to the Champions League knockout stages this evening after a comfortable 3-1 victory over Partizan Belgrade in Group H. However the Gunners held their nerve and regained the lead through Theo Walcott whilst Samir Nasri added a third to put qualification beyond doubt for Arsene Wenger's men. … [Read more...]

Arsenal's chances of qualifying for the knock-out stages of the Champions League hang in the balance after two late goals from Nascimento Matheus secured Braga an unexpected victory. To add insult to injury, Gunners captain Cesc Fabregas limped off injured during the second half but the night came to a miserable conclusion for Arsenal after a quick double from Matheus in the latter stages of the match leaves Arsene Wenger's men in trouble with just one match to play. … [Read more...]
