Arda Turan’s move to Barcelona
Barcelona’s forward options look set to get stronger as they confirmed the signing of Turkey international Arda Turan. The former Atletico Madrid man has always been a solid performer in La Liga, and on the Champions League stage, playing a significant part in Atletico’s journey to the final in the 2013-14 tournament, especially with an impressive performance away to Chelsea in that campaign. Despite his noticeable class however, he has not featured as regularly as many would imagine. Will his playing time increase at Barcelona? … [Read more...]
The British influence on Basque football
The arrival of David Moyes to Real Sociedad may have been considered a surprising managerial move at the time. To many, the idea of a Scot plying his trade in Spain of all places seemed like a strange appointment, a cultural juxtaposition of football playing styles, and a rare trek for someone who prior to leaving for Spain, barely knew a word of Spanish. … [Read more...]
Club Focus: Getafe CF
Out of all the teams in Spain's top flight, Getafe are not the most exciting. Whilst Barcelona are known for their philosophy, Real Madrid for their superstars, Athletic Bilbao for their dogged physicality, Getafe are... well, just Getafe. Despite not being a particularly glamorous club, they have done well in recent years to remain in the top division, fluctuating between the top half and lower ends of the La Liga table spectrum. … [Read more...]

Can we expect Spanish domination in Europe this year?
We've reached late April and three Spanish clubs have a chance of silverware in Europe. For Sevilla, a Europa League semi-final is becoming familiar ground, for a club who have thrived in the competition in recent years. The Europa league holders overcame a stern test in Russia as they triumphed over Zenit St Petersburg, despite a shaky display from goalkeeper Beto. Kevin Gameiro hammered in the winner to make the score 2-2 and put the Spanish outfit through on aggregate. The Andalusians will face Fiorentina in their semi-final showdown. … [Read more...]
Antoine Griezmann – Atletico’s ultimate winger
When we consider an Atletico Madrid team, playing at their best, we only have to look at the workmen-like team spirit, employed by their bullish manager Diego Simeone. Tough, physical and robust describe their players, roared on by a packed Vicente Calderon stadium. To be worthy of a place in the champions line-up you must prove yourself as fighter, someone willing to put their head in where it hurts most, a quality in which strikers Falcao, and Diego Costa have shown in recent times. … [Read more...]
It just gets better for Eibar
A few years ago, barely anyone could even contemplate a La Liga fixture between Espanyol and Eibar. Espanyol have been a team sitting comfortably in the top flight, whilst until recently Eibar, were scrapping around the lower divisions. It has been an incredible journey for the club who play their home games at the 'Iperua' stadium, infront of just over 5000 fans. A team once squashed out of the picture by locals; Bilbao and Real Sociedad, they now sit above their city dwellers in a comfortable eighth position in the league standings. … [Read more...]
