It had to be him didn’t it!
Lionel Messi struck the only goal of the game at the Camp Nou against Levante to secure his tenth La Liga title and twenty-sixth in the club’s history.
The title success will arguably go down as one of Barcelona’s easiest seasons especially in recent memory with three games still to go and little to no threat coming from Real Madrid all campaign.
And so, it was left to the club’s talisman on Sunday night to strike the killer blow against a Levante side who showed plenty of spirit as they tried to get away from the city with a point in the bag which would have proved incredibly useful in their battle to avoid the drop.
Paco López’s men put up a stoic defence too holding out until just over the hour mark when Messi latched onto Vidal’s header, beat two defenders and stroked the ball into the back of the net.
Going for the treble
No doubt about it, Barcelona are the kings of Spain this season and are still attempting to claim a treble of trophies.
Now the league title is in the bag, Ernesto Valverde can allow his charges to focus on the two-legged Champions League affair with Liverpool with as Messi and co chase down a first European trophy since 2015.
There is also the not so small matter of meeting Valencia in the final of the Copa Del Rey on May 25th.
The match is just six days before the final of the Champions League which could prove to be one of the most important weeks in the club’s history if they can overcome the Reds of Liverpool.
Barca joy, Real misery
Barcelona’s sweep to the title and potential treble just goes to highlight the problems Zinedine Zidane has at Real Madrid.
A turbulent season is set to end trophy less (discounting the club world cup) and third in La Liga.
Currently 18-points behind their great rivals, Zidane will be eager to get into the summer as soon as possible and start the rebuilding job which the defeat to Rayo Vallecano proved is vital if they are to contest the title race next season.
For now though, Spain belongs to Barca and they could just conqueror Europe just to really add salt into Real’s wound.
