The International break is over with Spanish football riding high after impressive wins over first England, then a 6-0 thumping of World Cup finalists Croatia.
Despite the national team’s summer woes, the is the sense that something special could be about to emerge once again as former Barcelona head coach Luis Enrique has started to stamp his authority on the side.
That positivity looks set to make its mark on this weekend round of La Liga fixtures as we highlight three games you simply won’t want to miss this weekend.
Huesca v Rayo Vallecano – Friday
Both these sides have been in the news in recent weeks and not for the right reasons.
Rayo Vallecano’s stadium has had to be shut down until Mid-October due to safety concerns which led to the postponement of the club’s match with Athletic Bilbao.
Newly promoted minnows Huesca made the news for getting thumped 8-2 prior to the International break by none other than Barcelona.
However, despite the loss, Huesca have made a bright start to life with four points from three games which is four more than Rayo has managed.
Come to the end of the season, this game could play a vital role in the battle to avoid a drop and will be one not to miss.
Athletic Bilbao v Real Madrid – Saturday
The standout tie of the weekend must surely be Real Madrid’s trip to the Basque country to face Bilbao.
Athletic have proven stern opposition over the years but Real will still expect to claim the three points.
The last two meetings between the two have resulted in draws meaning Real may not have the game all their own way and may see themselves drop their first points of the campaign.
Girona v Celta Vigo – Monday
Celta Vigo has started the season with aplomb after winning two and drawing one in their opening three games.
Their opponents Girona are enjoying their second season in the Spanish top flight after storming into the top ten in their debut campaign and turning over Real Madrid.
There is no sign of second-season syndrome just yet for Girona with on win, one draw, and one defeat from their opening three games.
One of these two sides may be in line for a run to a Europa League spot come the end of the season making this game one to keep a sharp eye on.
