Spanish minnows Huesca are celebrating after achieving promotion to the top table of Spanish football for the first time in the club’s history after a 2-0 victory over Lugo in Spain’s second tier Segunda division was enough to see the side claim enough points to guarantee promotion.
With two games still to go, Huesca will now aim to win the Segunda title ahead of Rayo Vallecano who they have a two-point advantage over.
A Long Road to the Top
The club is notable for their similarity in kits to the mighty Barcelona who they will be mixing it with next season and can trace their heritage to Barce as the club was formed in 1910 by fans of the Catalan giants before folding just sixteen years later.
However, that would not prove to be the end as 1960 came around, the club re-emerged as Sociedad Deportiva Huesca.
A total of 30 seasons in Spain’s fourth tier have since followed with sixteen seasons in Segunda B and eight seasons in Segunda before finally reaching the promised land of La Liga.
Where is Huesca and What’s the Ground Like?
Remarkably, despite being formed by fans of Barcelona, the club is actually located a lengthy 170-miles to the West of Spain in the region of Aragon which can only boast Real Zaragoza as the regions only other club to make it to La Liga.
Their ground is known as the Estadio El Alcoraz and only holds 5,500 spectators which is slightly smaller than Dover Athletics’ ground who play in the National League in England which is the fifth tier of English football meaning visiting clubs are in for an intimate experience.
What are Their Chances of Survival Next Season?
Girona, Eibar, Alaves, and Leganes are living proof in recent years that size does not matter when it comes to survival in La Liga.
Eibar is a club of similar size in terms of Stadia and has now firmly established themselves as one of Spain’s top twenty sides after back to back seasons in La Liga’s top ten.
Girona were the debutants this season in La Liga and made it look easy as they overcame a certain Real Madrid on their way to finishing tenth.
This will only go to motivate a Huesca side who will be mixing it with the big boys as an equal for the first time in their history.
