Cristiano Ronaldo’s opening goal in Real Madrid’s 2-0 Champions League victory over Roma on Wednesday evening bore a striking resemblance to a goal he’d scored earlier in his career for Manchester United.
The discovery was made yesterday thanks to an eagle-eyed user of the popular social networking site Reddit.
Executing his trademarked ‘Ronaldo chop’ move, the 31-year-old cut inside the Roma defence to score a deflected shot that looped over the helpless Wojciech Szczesny.
In a very similar goal scored for previous club Manchester United in their 4-0 Champions League win over Dynamo Kyiv in 2007, the flying winger cut inside using some of his dazzling trickery to curl the ball into the back of the net, this time without a deflection.
With Real now having a comfortable two goal lead to take back to the return fixture of this Champions League tie at the Bernabéu on the 8th of March, the Spanish giants are now 1/50 favourites with bookmakers to progress to the quarter finals of the competition.
