Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has picked up the La Liga player of the month award for January according to La Liga’s official Spanish website.
Today marks the first time in the Argentine’s career that he has picked up the award and quite astonishingly becomes only the second Barca player in history to scoop the prize after team mate Neymar won it November of last year.
Messi, 28 will likely feature in his Catalonian side’s La Liga match-up with Celta Vigo on Sunday after returning to training Monday morning following a routine kidney surgery the week previous.
The Argentine magician had a rather fruitful January in La Primera Division, netting 6 goals including a hat trick in Los Blaugraunes 4-0 victory over Granada on the 9th of January.
