Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has revealed that the Reds should have signed Mesut Ozil during his time at Werder Bremen.
Mesut Ozil is currently one of the best attacking players in the world and the 27-year old has already enjoyed an illustrious career playing for the likes of the German national team, Real Madrid and now Arsenal.
Before he was a world star following the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa though, Ozil was touted as a talented youngster while plying his trade for German Bundesliga side Werder Bremen.
Ozil eventually moved on to Real Madrid from Bremen but now former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher has made an interesting admission.
Carragher has revealed that he had noticed Ozil’s talents during his Werder Bremen days and had told former teammate Steven Gerrard that Liverpool needed to sign the German international at the time.
Carragher stated, “I remember watching Ozil shine for Germany’s Under 21s in 2009 when they beat England 4-0. I said to Steven Gerrard at that time he was someone Liverpool had to go for.
“He was at Werder Bremen then and he was an attainable target. He continued that big impression at the World Cup in South Africa 12 months later but, by that time, Real Madrid had made their move.”
