A painful last few minutes for Real Sociedad against Getafe have left them just outside the relegation zone with five points from eight games. It has been a dreadful start from the white and blue which they need to turn around quickly if they are to challenge for a place in Europe.
Pablo Hervais’ tap-in 82 minutes in looked to have sealed all three points for the royals but two quick goals in stoppage time from Getafe striker Yoda snatched the win for the away side.
Getafe looked the livelier of the two sides in the first half. A low, driven shot from Paulo Sarabia struck the inside of the post midway through the first 45. Shortly afterwards, Sociedad responded with Castro volleying low and hard only to strike the inside post at an angle.
In the second half, former Valencia goalkeeper Guaita made a fine save from Icelandic forward Finnbogason to deny Sociedad the lead.
Yoda was then involved in two chances for Getafe that caused Sociedad to worry. He cut in from the right hand-side and hit the ball straight at Guaita, forcing a save from the Spaniard. Not long after, he played a clever back heel pass into Herrero for the winger only to hit it straight at the keeper.
A 0-0 draw ensued however, Carlos Vela drilled a cross into the six yard area for Hervais, who was alone, to tap the ball in, giving Sociedad the lead late on.
‘Master’ Yoda picked the ball up on the edge of the box, shifted it onto his left foot and then placed the ball into the corner of the goal, destroying Sociedad’s hope of getting all three points. Straight after, a clever bit of dribbling from striker Sammir allowed him to weave into the box and pull the ball back to Yoda who slotted into the open net in the 94th minute to secure all three points for Getafe.
This has left the royals with one win all season, surprisingly against on-form team Real Madrid, and only 5 points in total from eight games.
This is from team who finished a very respectable 7th in the Primera Division last season and qualified for this seasons Europa league, as well as reaching the semi-final of the Copa Del Rey only to be beaten by Barcelona 3-1 on aggregate.
So what has happened at the Anoeta? The loss of key player Antoine Griezmann in the summer to current La Liga holders Atletico Madrid has been a contributing factor. Poor performances from other key players such as Carlos Vela, who has only netted once this season within the league and not assisted a team-mate. Losing first choice goalkeeper and world cup star Claudio Bravo to Barcelona hasn’t helped either and they are yet to keep a clean sheet in the league so far.
What is next for the white and blues? They face an away trip to a Cordoba side at the weekend who are bottom of the table and without a win this season, which should result in all three points being taken from the match. Sociedad also have some difficult fixtures coming up such as Ateltico on November the 9th so it is important they start picking up points and climb the league table. There are new rumours of former Real Betis boss Pepe Mel being in contact with Sociedad so it looks likely that a poor result this weekend could mean that the end is nigh for Jagoba Arrasate.
