Atletico Madrid have today completed a deal to sign Alessio Cerci from Torino after the forward completed a medical with the La Liga champions. Italian international Cerci joins on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
27-year-old Cerci scored 11 times for Torino last season as he and Ciro Immobile formed a formidable forward duo for the Turin club. He helped them to qualify for the Europa League, but Serie A’s leading scorer Immobile departed for Borussia Dortmund, and Cerci followed him out of the Torino door.
Atletico, who struggled past lowly Eibar at the weekend, need to reinforce their attacking options after Diego Costa left for Chelsea early on in the summer. Whilst Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandzukic have been brought in, Atletico still look short up front, and will hope their forward line clicks by the time the Champions League group stages come around.
With Arda Turan and Cristian Rodriguez still at the club, Cerci will add to the attacking quality Atleti possess, and help the club win more trophies under Diego Simeone.
Cerci went to the World Cup with Italy in the summer, and whilst it was a dismal display from the four-time World Champions, Cerci featured off of the bench regularly.
It was rumoured that Arsenal were in for the striker, but, as always, it proved to be nothing more than just paper talk, despite their need for another striker following injury to Olivier Giroud.
