Bayern Munich are in the process of signing Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso, with the midfielder set to undergo a medical today. Alonso, who announced his retirement from the Spanish national team this week, will be allowed to leave after five seasons at the Bernabeu.
The news comes just days after Manchester United completed a £59m move for Angel Di Maria, as another of Carlo Ancelotti’s trusted players looks set to make way. Alonso and Di Maria were key players in Madrid’s rejuvenation last season, as the club embarked on a long unbeaten run.
Madrid have brought in Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez for big money this summer, and have been keen to reduce the squad size before the transfer window closes.
The fee could be anything between £5m and £10m, with Bayern looking to further strengthen their incredible midfield. Pep Guardiola has been dealt a blow with Javi Martinez’s knee injury, which will sideline the Spaniard for around nine months, but has been quick to find a top quality player to play in his midfield position.
Alonso, 32, won the Champions League with Real Madrid last season, nine years after doing the same with Liverpool. Despite being suspended for the final, Alonso will add to the World Cup winning contingent at Bayern, as many of the German national team were successful in Brazil this summer.
