Tottenham are closing in on Argentine defender Mateo Musaccio after Villarreal took Victor Ruiz on loan from Valencia on Tuesday. Musacchio has been courted by Spurs for a number of weeks now, and could finally make the move with Villarreal having found a replacement.
Mauricio Pochettino has been keen on 23-year-old Musacchio, who has impressed the likes of Barcelona with his strong defensive displays on Villarreal’s return to La Liga last season. The player himself has also been said to be keen on the move, which explains why he was left out of the club’s pre-season friendly against Swansea.
A deal could cost Spurs up to £20m, with Villarreal set to receive just a portion of that total fee due to third party ownership. The deal hinges on whether Musacchio’s agent will waive his percentage of the fee and allow the defender to move to White Hart Lane.
The move had been in the pipeline for a while, but looks set to be completed this week with Villarreal having recruited a replacement. Victor Ruiz joins from Valencia only on loan, but the club could spend some of the transfer fee they receive from the Musacchio deal on more defenders.
Musacchio played 32 times in La Liga last season and was one of the more impressive players in the division, helping the club to a Europa League qualification spot.

Old, old news and highly unlikely. Why should the player’s agent, who owns a third, relinquish six million pounds?
