Antoine Griezmann has ended speculation concerning his future by sealing a move to La Liga champions Atletico Madrid. The Frenchman looked set to leave Sociedad this summer, with a number of clubs interested in the winger, but will play his football next season at the Vicente Calderon, should he pass a medical.
Griezmann was Sociedad’s top scorer last year with 16 La Liga goals, quickly becoming one of the division’s brightest young players. Having helped guide La Real into the Champions League the year previous, his talismanic presence could only haul the squad into the Europa League qualification spots.
He also represented his country at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, playing three games as France were eliminated by champions Germany in the quarter-finals.
His participation in Brazil had made him one of Europe’s most wanted players, and will add to his transfer fee, expected to be around £24m. Atletico, having been busy in the transfer window so far, are looking to retain their title despite losing a number of key players from their glorious triumph.
Thibaut Cortois, Diego Costa and Filipe Luis have all left for Chelsea, with Atletico replacing them in the form of Jan Oblak, Mario Mandzukic and Guilherme Siqueira respectively, whilst David Villa has moved to the United States. Griezmann will link up with Mandzukic, Arda Turan and Koke in forming Atletico’s new frontline, ready to take on La Liga once again.
