Colombia and Monaco’s young sensation James Rodriguez is reported to be arriving in Madrid imminently to sign for Los Blancos in a transfer that could become a world record fee. However the deal could hinge on the sale of one of Real’s midfielders, with either Isco or Angel Di Maria being tipped as the ones to depart.
According to reports in Spain and France, James’ arrival looks to be a certainty, with all but the transfer fee to be decided, estimated to be around £80m. The youngster, 23, was asked whether he preferred Real Madrid or Barcelona following one of Colombia’s matches at the World Cup, and his choice of Madrid looks to be coming to fruition.
James scored six times in Brazil, picking up the award for the top scorer as Colombia made it to the quarter-finals, even without Radamel Falcao. He plays his football in Monaco following a £40m move from Porto last summer, but local media are saying he has played his final game for the principality side.
Real are thought to have offered Monaco £80m for James with a player thought to be involved too. Diego Lopez has been one of those in certain reports, and could be ideal for Monaco having rejected free-agent Victor Valdes earlier this summer.
However, to fund the move for James, Madrid are looking to de-clutter their midfield with Angel Di Maria the most likely to go. Manchester United are rumoured to be in for the Argentinian winger, but are unlikely to pay Real’s £60m valuation. Isco is another who has fallen out of favour, and Liverpool are one of the teams mentioned concerning a possible loan deal for the Spaniard. Sami Khedira is another midfielder who could be on his way out of the club, has been linked with a move to Arsenal in recent weeks.
The club has allowed Alvaro Morata to depart for Juventus, bringing in €20m, whilst Casemiro and Nuri Sahin have also left the Santiago Bernabeu, albeit Casemiro is only on-loan to Porto.
Madrid’s summer spending has been uncharacteristically quiet this year, with Toni Kroos the only player to join the club. The club broke the world record for highest transfer fee last year by bringing in Gareth Bale and could do that for the second year running if the James deal comes off.
