Arsenal have interrupted Marseille’s attempts to sign Atletico Madrid defender Manquillo in a bid to bring the Spaniard to London instead. It is thought that Arsene Wenger wants Manquillo to provide competition to incoming signing Mathieu Debuchy.
Manquillo, 20, was due to sign with Marcelo Bielsa’s Marseille but for Arsenal’s interventions. The move has now been paused as news of Arsenal’s interest filters through to Manquillo’s representatives.
Arsenal want the youngster on a season-long-loan deal to provide Debuchy with competition upon his arrival at the Emirates Stadium. A deal for the youngster could send Carl Jenkinson out of the club, with his services being part of the deal that eventually brings in Debuchy.
The need for right-backs is unquestionable, with Bacary Sagna signing for Manchester City during the summer. Arsenal remain keen on Southampton’s Calum Chambers too, but will wait until next season when the Saints star has more experience and is not part of the mass exodus at St Mary’s.
By bringing in Manquillo, the defender would gain experience and Arsenal can make their move for Chambers next season. The Atleti player was part of the first-team squad last season, but missed the latter stages after suffering a nasty neck injury against Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey.
Manquillo could join the club hours after Arsenal completed the signing of another La Liga star – Alexis Sanchez. The forward arrives at the Emirates Stadium for around £35m from Barcelona, who also confirmed the signing of Luis Suarez for £73m on Friday.
