Jonathan dos Santos will link up with his brother Giovanni once again after he completed a €2m move to Villarreal from Barcelona. The Mexican pair came up through the Barca academy but will now represent the Yellow Submarines in La Liga next season.
JDS has agreed a five-year-deal with Villarreal, ending 12 years at Barcelona where he found first-team football tough to come by. He made just 28 appearances for Barcelona in a period of his career blighted by serious injury. A cruciate knee injury in October last year left the 24-year-old on the sidelines for many months during the previous season and is hoping Villarreal will provide a fresh start.
He is due to be unveiled as a Villarreal player on Thursday in an official presentation. He joins his brother Giovanni, who joined from Mallorca following their relegation one summer ago. Both are graduates of La Masia and Barcelona still have some say in the future transfers of Jonathan, with a clause inserted into his new deal.
Despite making just three appearances last season, Barcelona were grateful for the effort JDS put in during his spell at the club since making his debut in 2009.
“FC Barcelona wishes to publicly thank the professionalism and dedication of Jonathan dos Santos this season, and wishes him the best for the future,” said a statement on their official club website.
Dos Santos has made 6 appearances for his native Mexico, but the last call-up came in 2012. He was banned from the team for allegedly getting involved with prostitutes during the 2011 Copa America. Good performances for Villarreal could reignite an international future for the younger dos Santos brother.
