It looks certain that Valencia midfielder Sergio Canales will be heading to the English Premier League this week – the only question is where will he be heading? Everton and Fulham are battling for his signature.
Canales is a 22 year old attacking midfielder on the fringes of the Valencia team. He started his career at Racing Santander and was seen as one of the hottest prospects in Spanish football when he moved to Real Madrid in 2010.
It was then that he picked up his first major injury – a knee ligament injury that sidelined him for six months. He returned for Madrid, but five games later the same injury returned costing him another six month lay off.
Valencia signed him in 2012 but he never recaptured his pre-injury form. It is believed that Juan Antonio Pizzi wants him off the Valencia wage bill this transfer window, and is open to a loan or permanent deal.
Everton manager Roberto Martinez expressed an interest two days ago, but he has been beaten to the punch by Fulham. Rene Muelensteen has asked Valencia to loan him to the Cottagers for the rest of the season, with a view to a permanent move in the summer. Muelensteen is desperate to reinforce Fulham’s midfield and believes that he can get the talanted but troubled midfielder ticking again.
Canales would prefer a move to Everton, but will they make a concrete offer before the transfer window shuts once more? Fulham remain the favourites.
