Normal service has been resumed at the top of La Liga, Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory at home to Granada saw them open a two point gap over Barcelona and Atletico, both of whom have yet to play this weekend.
It was a record breaking result, if not a pulse racing performance. The win marked a magnificent seven wins in a row without conceding a single goal – a Real Madrid record. Carlo Ancelotti’s side have hit top gear now, an ominous sign for their title rivals.
The party atmosphere was soured somewhat by an injury to record signing Gareth Bale, who had to be replaced by Jese at the start of the second half.
Granada defended stoutly, Madrid had the possession but were frustrated by their lack of clear cut scoring opportunities. 55 minutes had gone when, who else, Cristiano Ronaldo shot home after an assist from the ever impressive Luka Modric. The mood at the Bernabeau lifted. It had seemed that the pressure was getting to them in the same way that it had got to Bara and Atleti, who both drew last weekend.
Karim Benzema wrapped up the points in the 74th minute. It was all hands to the pump for Granada, but they found Madrid’s relentless attacking play impossible to resist. It’s a problem that the rest of La Liga will have to face as the season reaches its climax. On this form, Real Madrid have to be favourites to regain their crown.
