This week’s Copa Del Rey action witnessed a remarkable turn around for Real Sociedad. They were beaten four one at Villareal on Monday night, see the report here on La Liga Blog: http://laligablog.com/?p=3590 but they managed to regroup in time for Thursday night’s clash at the same ground.
Villareal won 1-0 at El Madrigal thanks to a goal from Javi Ros and progressed through to the quarter finals after a goalless first leg.
Villalreal had a great chance to equalise from the penalty spot, after a dubious decision, but Perbet’s attempt was dreadful – high, wide and not at all handsome. Surely it will rival Jason Puncheon’s effort as the worst European penalty of the year.
The main shock of the round saw Racing Santander, languishing in the third tier of Spanish football, securing a giant killing win over Almeria. Here is a list of this weeks reults, with the aggregate score in brackets:
Atletico 2 Valencia 0 (3-1)
Espanyol 4 Alcorcon 2 (4-3)
Athletic Bilbao 2 Real Betis 0 (2-1)
Racing Santander 2 Almeria 0 (3-1)
Getafe 0 Barcelona 2 (0-6)
Levante 1 Rayo Vallecano 0 (1-0)
Osasuna 0 Real Madrid 2 (0-4)
The quarter finals will be played on the 21st and 28th of January. The draw has already been made for the semi-finals and Real Madrid and Barcelona will avoid each other if they prove successful in the round of eight.
