Could Barcelona right back Martin Montoya be on his way to Liverpool? The young defender made a rare start for Barcelona last night in their four nil victory over Getafe, even managing to tee up Lionel Messi for his comeback goal in the process, but could it be the last appearance that he makes for the Blaugrana?
Montoya is a great prospect, sure on the ball, full of energy and able to play at left back as well as right, but he isn’t going to force his way past Dani Alves any time soon. Brendan Rodgers has seen a steady improvement from his Liverpool side this season but improving the Red’s defensive line remains a priority. Glen Johnson has been linked with a move away from Liverpool and it is my belief that Montoya is his number one target for this transfer window.
There is one problem however – Montoya wants to stay at the Camp Nou. He accepts that his chances will be limited this season, and for the foreseeable future, but sees a move to any other club as a retrograde step in his career.
Montoya has six months left on his contract and firm negotiations have yet to begin on a new one but the 22 year old seems unconcerned: “There is no hurry for me to sign a new deal. I am at the best club in the world and I learn each day from Dani Alves.”
Liverpool are unlikely to be put off – Montoya is the one that they want and they will do all they can to persuade him to move on to further his career – Alves is a youthful thirty and a move could be essential if Montoya wants to gain first team experience. I predict that Montoya could soon be moving to Anfield on loan until the end of the season.
