After an exciting weekend of La Liga action in which the shares were spoiled in the all too anticipated El Clasico, we decided that Lionel Messi’s second goal – a perfectly placed free kick to take Barcelona into a 2-1 lead in the second half of Barca v Real is our goal of the week. Barca fought back from a one goal deficit after Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring for Jose Mourinho’s side in the opening twenty-five minutes.
Barcelona were back on level terms less than ten minutes later however after a failed clearance from Portuguese defender Pepe allowed Lionel Messi the time and space to poke home a quick-fire equaliser and restore parity for Barca. On sixty minutes Messi put his side in front after a perfectly guided free-kick from thirty yards out found its way into the top right hand corner of the goal leaving Madrid keeper Iker Casillas without a prayer. But Barca’s lead lasted barely four minutes before usual suspect Cristiano Ronaldo popped up again to make it 2-2 after a cool finish.
The game ended all square at 2-2 with Barcelona’s eight point lead in La Liga over rivals Madrid still intact and it is Argentinian marvel Lionel Messi who wins our goal of the week award. Watch all the highlights from Sunday’s game including Messi’s spectacular goal below.
