Chelsea gave their Champions League hopes a massive boost this evening as they ran out 2-0 winners over FC Copenhagen thanks to two goals from Nicholas Anelka.
The Blues started brightly and it didn’t take long for the away side to open the scoring after a misplaced pass from ex-Chelsea midfielder Jesper Gronkjaer fell straight to Anelka’s feet and he provided a cool finish past the Copenhagen keeper Johan Wiland just inside twenty minutes.
As the second peiord began things worsened for the hosts and again it didn’t take long for Chelsea to take the initiative and add a second goal following a spell of intense pressure.
Some clever play from Frank Lampard allowed Nicholas Anelka to wander into the box unmarked and place another lethal finish into the Copenhagen net and more or less put the game beyond doubt.
After a pleasing night for the London club the onus was again on super-signing Fernando Torres to find the net for his new club but it was the 31 year-old Frenchman Anelka who proved more deadly after providing two important goals.
Chelsea looked more like the Chelsea of old this evening and triumphed in a game many expected them to struggle in. Carlo Ancelotti’s men return to Stamford Bridge with two away goals in their favour and now have a great opportunity to reach the Champions League quarter finals for the first time since 2009.
