Blackpool ran out shock 3-0 victors over Tottenham Hotspur this evening thanks to goals from Charlie Adam, DJ Campbell and Brett Omerod.
After their fine display in Milan last weekend Tottenham Hotspur struggled to replicate their European triumphs on the Premier League stage as hosts Blackpool put in an assured display in front of their home crowd at Bloomfield Road this evening.
Blackpool were strong from the outset and highly-sought after midfielder Charlie Adam was the man to give his side the lead as he calmy converted a Blackpool penalty following a clumsy Sebastien Bassong challenge inside the penalty box.
As expected the visitors Spurs battled back as the game progressed and nearly levelled through Steven Pienaar in the first period but it was Blackpool yet again who added to the scoring against the run of play when striker DJ Campbell was able to latch onto a weighted James Beattie cross and make it 2-0. The move was a swift counter-attack play which has been a hallmark of Blackpool’s season and no doubt the Seasiders were delighted to see Campbell’s strike end up in the back of the net.
Tottenham continued to dominate pressure with Jermaine Jenas coming close inside the second period for his side but it was Blackpool who were able to find the net for a third time when Brett Omerod played a precise shot past the reach of Heurelho Gomes to mark his first Premier League goal in seven years.
Spurs grabbed a late consolation one minute from the end when a Roman Pavlyuchenko shot deflected horrendously off Blackpool defender Craig Cathcart and into the Blackpool net but the points were already safe for the Seasiders and their vital win sees them lifted to 12th in the Premier League table.
Spurs’ loss will be a considered a major concern by Harry Redknapp and his men as they worryingly sit just two points clear of rivals Chelsea who enjoyed a 2-0 victory in Europe of FC Copenhagen this evening.
