Real Madrid have completed the signing of German international Toni Kroos from Bayern Munich today for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around €30m. Kroos joins the club on a deal that will make him a Madridista until 2020.
The 24-year-old, who played every minute of Germany’s triumphant World Cup campaign in Brazil last month, will wear the number 8 shirt after joining the European Champions.
Rumours had been flying around concerning Kroos’ future at Bayern Munich, with Manchester United also interested in the midfielder. Instead Kroos preferred to make the move to Spain and join Madrid in a transfer that he described as ‘a dream come true’.
Kroos joins the club the year they won their tenth Champions League title, and intends to win many more honours at the Santiago Bernabeu, having won a historic treble at Bayern just two seasons ago.
The German juggernauts won the Bundesliga, Champions League and German Cup in 2012/13, before enjoying success in both the European Super Cup and the FIFA World Club Cup.
At Madrid, Kroos links up with German colleague Sami Khedira, but it might not be for long as Arsenal are in for the defensive midfielder. Others who might be outgoing following Kroos’ arrival are Isco, Xabi Alonso or Angel Di Maria – wanted by Manchester United in a big-money move.
Los Blancos will begin the season looking to retain the Champions League, whilst also wrestling the La Liga title back from rivals Atletico Madrid and fending off a new-look Barcelona.
