For years now, football fans across the globe have reminisced about David Beckham’s debut season in the Premier League and that infamous goal he scored from the half way line against Wimbledon. It seems Spain after all these years now finally have their own answer to the long-range heroics of David Beckham in the form of novice Real Sociedad defender Inigo Martinez, who has already netted two stunning long-range goals from the half way line this season against both Athletic Bilbao and Real Betis respectively.
What made his second goal particularly special was the circumstances it came in, in their 3-2 victory over Real Betis earlier this season.
Sociedad were hanging on at 2-2 against Betis in a closely fought encounter which looked destined to end as a draw until right on the final whistle Spanish centre-back Martinez takes the ball at his feet and launches the ball from the half-way line over the stranded Betis goalkeeper into the back of the net to claim an infamous last-gasp victory for Sociedad.
His earlier effort against Bilbao was pretty special too, taking everyone including Martinez himself by surprise. Despite his phenomenal goal, Sociedad still went on to lose the game 2-1 after a double strike from usual suspect Fernando Llorente.
